My Story - Zdzislaw Nagengast

In 2007 I was working as a business consultant. My partner asked me to join him at a meeting to see how we might be able to help a small non-profit develop a strategic plan. I had to travel to a small town outside of Atlanta, Georgia and had another in a long string of bad travel experiences. I was tired and frustrated. John Mroz met us at my partner’s residence and we proceeded to dinner, a 30 minute drive. I sat in ...more »

In the aftermath of Chernobyl, 1986

My first contact with IEWSS was in Salzburg, Austria, in 1986. That January, together with 38 fellows from 24 countries, I attended the Salzburg Seminar, Session 247, on “Changing Patterns on US – European Relations.” At Salzburg Schloss Leopoldskrom, where the Seminar was held, I met, among the 10 lecturers, F. Stephen Larrabee, Vice President and Director of Studies at IEWSS. The picture below shows the group in front ...more »

Central Eurasia Leadership Academy - by Vazil Hudak

Some of my best moments when working for EWI in early 2000’s were related to CELA (Central Eurasia Leadership Academy). The original idea of the project was to identify and bring together young leaders from Central Eurasia (all “stans” in Cental Asia + Caucasian republics) for a leadership training, which took place at the Koc University in Istanbul. The main purpose of the whole exercise was to contribute to a better ...more »

Carpathian Euroregion - by Vazil Hudak

I believe one of the most innovative and fascinating projects that EWI did in 1990s was the creation of the Carpathian Euroregion, which later lead to the establishment of the Carpathian Foundation. The whole process started in 1992, at the time when the wars in the Balkans and in the former Soviet Union started to spread. Carpathian region incorporating 5 post-communist countries (Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, ...more »

Friend - Partner - Ally; by Pavol Demes

Pavol Demeš, former EWI Board Member, wrote to share news of his most recent book, which he says recalls EWI's "serious contributions" to the development of U.S. - Slovak relations in the ‘90s. Published last month, Friend - Partner - Ally describes a crucial U.S. governmental visit to Slovakia in the early ‘90s, when U.S. Vice President Dan Quayle's participated at the East-West Summit in Bardejov in June 1991, organized ...more »
